Demand Lower Fuel Costs Through Fair and Transparent Pricing
Problem
Millions of Indian households, commuters, transport workers, farmers, small businesses, and logistics operators depend on petrol, diesel, and other fuels for their daily activities. Changes in fuel prices can directly affect household budgets and increase transportation, delivery, agricultural, and business costs. Many consumers also find it difficult to understand how the final retail price is calculated, including the impact of crude oil prices, taxes, duties, dealer commissions, and other components. This lack of transparency can make it difficult for citizens to understand why prices change and whether reductions in underlying costs are being fairly reflected at the pump. The petition calls for greater transparency in fuel pricing and clearer public disclosure of the major components that determine retail fuel prices, so consumers can better understand what they are paying and policymakers can be held accountable for fair and transparent pricing.
Proposed Solution
We propose a transparent fuel-pricing framework that clearly discloses the major components of the retail price, including crude oil costs, central and state taxes, duties, dealer commissions, and other applicable charges. Fuel companies and relevant authorities should publish regular pricing breakdowns and explain significant price changes. We also call for stronger consumer oversight and periodic reviews to ensure that changes in international fuel costs are reflected fairly and transparently in domestic prices. This would help consumers understand what they are paying for and promote greater accountability in fuel pricing.
