Ensure Transparency in Online Account Blocking and Protect Digital Rights
Problem
Concerns have been raised regarding the blocking and restriction of several social media accounts and online platforms in India. Many citizens, journalists, content creators, and civil society groups believe that the lack of clear public explanations for such actions can affect freedom of expression and access to information. When online accounts are blocked without sufficient transparency, it can create uncertainty and reduce public trust in digital governance. A balanced approach is needed to protect both national interests and the digital rights of citizens.
Proposed Solution
We urge the Government of India and relevant authorities to establish transparent procedures for blocking online accounts, provide clear reasons for restrictions whenever legally possible, and create an accessible review and appeal mechanism for affected users. Regular public reporting on account-blocking actions should also be considered to improve accountability and public confidence.
